In times of crisis God often calls out individuals who have the courage and character to do what most of us are unwilling or unable to do. The Reverend Canon Gideon Byamugisha is one of those people.

Since going public about his HIV status in 1992, Canon Gideon has tirelessly provided a prophetic voice to the church and the broader public, encouraging an open, compassionate and robust response to the HIV/AIDS crisis.

His efforts to break the silence, end stigmatization and discrimination, and promote a loving response to those affected by the virus have led him to the halls of power across the globe. He has been invited to speak at the White House, the United Nations General Assembly, and the European Union and to the President of the World Bank.

People listen to Canon Gideon because he is sincere, passionate and wise. His personal experiences reveal first hand the challenges faced by those living with HIV/AIDS. His countless hours working with the HIV prevention and AIDS Care Project in the Diocese of Namirembe, Kampala, the Friends of Canon Gideon Foundation and now with World Vision International's HIV/AIDS Hope Initiative, have sensitized his heart to the challenges faced by children,parents and communities impacted by this pandemic.

It has never been popular to speak out about HIV/AIDS. Much less for a member of the clergy. Canon Gideon was one of the first religious leaders in Africa to take that step. He is a pioneer in the truest sense of the word. And, as a result, things are beginning to change! His one voice is turning into many as fellow religious leaders continue to step forward to follow Gideon's example.
