SHILCE SECONDARY SCHOOL - August 2005

Preamble
SHILCE opened its doors to its pioneer students in 2001 and its official inception on the 29th/10/2001 with five students and twelve teachers. Spirits were high at the unfolding of this historic event, and that this unique project would have a great impact on the community in which it is located in general, and on the beneficiaries in particular.

Background of The School
The idea of Shilce secondary school was born after a motivational Vision conference that was facilitated by The Harvest Foundation in Jinja Uganda in 2000 and another follow-up conference at Nairobi International School of Theology (NIST) in Nairobi, Kenya in 2001.

Some Christians brethrens of our Church in Kenya who attended the seminar, decided to use the principles learnt to establish Shilce from the little resources they had to ensure that the young people from the Kawangware slums and its outskirts receive this kind of teachings that would help them to learn the little they have to develop their minds and their communities. The initial amount Kshs 3,400 that was used to pay rent for the first class was borrowed from a friend, which shows that God uses the little resources we have to bless us.

The School Information
Shilce Secondary School is an institution that has come up so as to cope with the need for the candidates who miss admission each year, after completion of class eight. Shilce School is as a result of the combined force of Christian brethren who are sacrificing and denying themselves so as to help the community reach and meet the needs of the unfortunate who become a menace to the community. The vision of foresighted professional brethren was conceived out of long-term cry by the community together with the administration to have a school to serve both the advantaged and the disadvantaged.

The school is conveniently situated in Dagoretti constituency in Riruta along Kabiria road, and in the immediate outskirts of Kawangware slums, which is the main catchments area for the school. It is strategically located to allow easy access both from the surrounding and from the wider Nairobi and its environs.

The school has a strong Christian foundation, creating a warm, caring and friendly environment, which enhances self-confidence and self-discipline. The staff is well qualified, experienced and dedicated to help the students realize their full potential.

The school offers the 8-4-4 system of education. It expects to develop and maintain high academic, moral, spiritual, and ethical standards in students so as to be citizens of high integrity.

Students

By the end of the first term, the number of students had grown to sixteen – 8 boys and 8 girls. They sat for their end term examination in 2001. However, since then some students who pioneered the project dropped out due to domestic problems and did not manage to sit for their National exams.

Even so, a good number managed to sit in 2004 the National Exams and others preparing to do so in 2005. The students’ population in 2005 stands at 120. It has been noted that Shilce has not confined itself to school age children alone but even adults have been given a chance to study. In the 2006, 200 students are expected to enroll with a standard class enrolment of 40.
