KAMAE /SOWETO SEED PROJECT

By Lucy . R. Njeri Muchiri Date: 2nd August, 2005

Mrs. Lucy R.N. Muchiri, is a trained Kenya Registered Nurse and professional counselor in Pastoral care and Christian counseling. She attended the Vision Conference and TOT in 2003.She was challenged and she came back to her organization Tributary Agencies, they planned for training at Kamae/Soweto slums, which are within Kahawa West area of Kasarani division in Nairobi.

The Challenge
When we called for the seminar in January 2005 ten people turned up for the training expecting money. We made it clear that we had no money to give unlike many organizations which come with donations, but we had a transforming story to tell. And so they were very eager to hear the story. We gave an overview of vision conference covering the Transforming story, The Power of the Story, World View, The Irreducible Minimum and the Seed Project. We emphasized the need for a seed project, using their local resources. This was an eye opener as there emerged a group of youth ready to start a seed project.

Seed Project: Group 1
From this initial training a group was formed of twelve people, who started contributing sh.10 per week, started garbage collection and making manure. As they do this they teach people the need for clean environment. To date they have twenty households whom they are collecting the garbage from as they continue to educate others. Each household pays Sh 20 per week for this services, to enable them to buy polythene bags and hire wheelbarrow to ferry garbage to damping site where they make composite manure, with the plan to plant vegetables They aim to increase their income through this seed project, with a long term plan to buy a pickup to facilitate their work and further their training skills.

Ezekiel 47: 9 ……..so where the river flows everything will live”

Group 2
These come up after Lucy’s initial follow up of one couple which attended the training. They have formed a group of ten people who contribute Sh.300 per month. Their project is pig rearing. They meet once a month and they are very excited of what they can do with their own resources. One member exclaimed the seed project concept really works!

Tributary Agencies aims at continuing to train the community in Samaritan Strategy through these groups. As they practice the irreducible minimum concept, love will grow within the community thereby bring Spiritual and Social transformation to the glory of
God.
