KITENDO - THE GOOD SAMARITAN ACT MINISTRY

Pastors from Korogocho attended one of the VISION Conferences in Nairobi. This is where they received hope and saw the possibility of transformation for the entire community through the Love of Christ.

One of the topics that challenged them was “The Irreducible Minimum” where they learnt that all the Law and the Prophets are summarised in the commandment ‘love your neighbour as you love yourself’. They learnt that no demonstration of love is too small or insignificant when done with a motivation of loving God, and that God multiplies and increases it.

After the training, the pastors together began a group called “Upendo” which means ‘Love’. The group later changed names to “Kitendo” which means “an Act”. One thing they thanked God for is that it united the pastors in this area.

The Kitendo group has a vision to see all people in Korogocho accepting and practicing the love of Jesus Christ to each other. They see the church as an agent of truth, promoting a wholistic approach towards life.

How are the pastors involved in the community’s transformation?
- Assisting children to got an education.
- The assist very needy families with food.
- They help provide medical care for very sick members of the community.
- The pastors have extended ministry into homes with home visits of care and encouragement.
- They have been promoting Biblical principles of family life that strengthen families.
- Promoting sanitation as a lifestyle by constructing community toilets.

How have the pastors funded these ministry projects?
The pastors contribute some money monthly which they use to meet the various ministry needs. They have rented a hall and an office. The pastors believe that with the proper utilisation of the available resources, they will make an impact in the community.

Through the different approaches of ministry that these pastors have employed, they have found that they are reaching more people, and more people are responding to the Gospel.

Future projects
As a way of building sustainability and responsibility among the people, the next phase is to encourage people to try income-generating activities. They intend to organise training for them, and also try making soap and candles, and also tailoring. This would provide needed income for households.
